The trend of small scale musicals keeps growing by the bounds on Broadway these days, and after the success of the small-yet-vast production known as “Maybe Happy Ending” and the not-as-successful-but-wildly-weird-and-engaging “Dead Outlaw,” they’re likely to keep popping up! Well, in a season of absolute boredom, a shining jewel’s finally been found, and it’s quite small but undeniably mighty. The name of this precious stone: “Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York).”

For those who know me, you all know I’m not one of those deep DEEP thinkers who can spew out philosophy or theory. I barely understood any of it my freshman year in Honors college. And for the more rounded theater people, it’s obvious this is what makes up the DNA for theatre of the absurd, a genre I find both unique and exhausting all at once. And to see the biggest piece of absurdism of them all feels like some kind of right of passage, especially when the script is all bare bones and you got someone like Jaime Lloyd who’s signature style is bare bones. But the final result of it all feels somewhat lackluster, and not even this staging could help me to understand what was coming out of anyone’s mouth.

I think we’ve all come to know how unyielding the wealthy elite can be. We see it enough in the media as it is, and for the ones that tend to have it coming, I find it sometimes a thrill to watch their empires crumble (that’s more the true crime part of me with those specific elites). Who doesn’t wanna have all the money and luxuries and influence in the world? And the people who do have tend to go on spending and spending on the grandest of things. But eventually ones gotta ask themselves, especially like the family at the center of “The Queen Of Versailles,” “when will enough be enough?”

The setting of this show may be listed as “a couch in the void” (I still can’t piece that one together given it’s also listed as Idaho, and yes, all that’s onstage is a couch), but what Samuel D. Hunter has filled into this void along with that couch is a case of familial drama at its finest; a tale of old wounds, surprising restarts, shattered hearts, and, above all, connection in the worst of times. These are what make up the DNA of “Little Bear Ridge Road,” the freshest new and entirely original play I’ve come to see in a really long time, and especially in a season that’s falling hard into the lackluster category.
One Impactful "Punch," And You're Sure To Cheer!September 29, 2025
Don’t let the title fool you, James Graham’s “Punch” may make you think it’s about nothing but physical violence, but, and while that’s kinda true, this is a “punch” that hits you more emotionally and not physically. It’s a riveting, highly compelling tale of redemption and community found in the least likely of places anyone could ever expect, and, without giving away too much about the storyline, you will be astonished, and even moved, as to where it’s found. It doesn’t take long for you to bite the bait this show gives you to be hooked, and once you’re hooked, the ride is one you don’t want to get off of.

I had my preconceived notions that this “Gatsby” would be a flat out, cheap, uninspiring, commercialized rendezvous given previous testimonies I’ve heard and read, so I decided to swear off seeing it given this was my favorite book, and I didn’t wanna see it presented as this type of garbage. But I went to celebrate my stepsister’s birthday, and now… those preconceived notions have now been confirmed.
